Resources and Links

Following are useful resource sites for ferret owners, guardians and shelters. Shelters, animal control facilities and humane organizations should also reference the resources made available through the Ferret Shelters Directory. That list is more comprehensive than the list maintained on this site which is primarily consumer-focused.

Ferret Shelters & Adoption Sites

Ferret Shelters Directory – national and international directory of ferret shelters, multi-species shelters, animal control facilities, humane organizations, vets, and pet stores that accept and adopt out pet ferrets. A joint project of the Ferret Association of Connecticut and Support Our Shelters (aka SOS).  (Replaces the SOS shelter list).

Petfinder – national database of adoptable cats, dogs and small furry animals.

Adopt-A-Pet – national database of adoptable cats, dogs and small furry animals.

Ferret Communities

Ferret Mailing List – the “grand-daddy” of ferret communities on the internet. In existence since 1987 , the FML, moderated by Bill Gruber, is a daily mailing list that has served the ferret community continuously. Subscribing is free and easy via email request to the moderator.

Facebook – there is a thriving ferret community on Facebook. Groups, community pages, galore in many languages. Topics range from the frivolous to the serious. There are fund-raisers and bereavement groups.  Join and search for “ferret.” You will certainly find friends along the way.

Google Plus+ – still relatively new to the ferret scene, there is a growing ferret community on Google Plus+

Ferret Veterinarians

The list of veterinarians treating ferrets in Connecticut and surrounding states changes constantly. Please check with the clinic or hospital to verify the information provided.

Pet Friendly Housing

The Apartment List is a national, searchable database of apartments for rent. It allows users to search by a various requirements including whether dogs, cats are allowed. It does cover Connecticut and other major areas around the country. It is definitely worth giving a shot in a search for pet friendly housing.
